The History of Jjimjilbang

A jjimjilbang is a Korean bathhouse and sauna facility. Bathing areas, heated rooms and spaces to rest can be combined in one venue; facilities and opening hours vary.
Bathhouse, sauna and shared leisure
Korea Tourism Organization describes jjimjilbang as Korean-style sauna venues with bathing and leisure facilities. Its Supsok Hanbang Land listing gives one example combining a traditional bathhouse with heated charcoal-kiln rooms. A particular venue is an example, not a description of every bathhouse.
The facilities, entry rules and services depend on the venue. Before visiting, check its current opening hours, admission conditions and the rules for the bathing and shared areas.
Where exfoliation fits
A bathhouse visit and an at-home exfoliating routine are different experiences. Our Italy towel guide explains an exfoliating cloth often associated with Korean bathing. The material and directions of a product sold today must be checked separately.
What can you bring into a home routine?
You can borrow the idea of taking time to wash and care for your body without recreating a sauna facility. Our three-step home guide offers an adaptable sequence: a comfortable bath or shower, cleansing with optional exfoliation, and after-bath care.
The currently available mugwort bath herb, cleansers, bath textiles and body oils are sold according to their own listings. They do not establish a historical formula or a complete traditional bathhouse kit.
Common questions
Are all jjimjilbang open 24 hours?
No universal opening schedule is assumed here. Confirm the current hours directly with the venue you plan to visit.
Is a jjimjilbang the same as a home bath routine?
No. A venue can combine bathing, heated rooms and shared facilities. The home routine in this shop is an interpretation inspired by bathing practices.
Do you need a bathtub to follow the home guide?
No. The guide starts with a bath or shower. A foot soak is a separate optional activity, and a bath herb should be prepared according to its pack directions.
